I Get Scared Just Watching This →
I really don’t know how this guy can pull this off.

@vincenzof: If Vimeo goes the way of Brightcove.tv, I’m going to hold my nose and go with You Tube for my (family-type) videos.

A Problem with Google News →
I love Google News. I use it several times per day, have news alerts and RSS feeds set up, etc. I’m not sure how I would get my news without it. Unfortunately, I’m seeing things like the image below much more frequently. Complete garbage. Google needs to keep hard news - factual accounts of world events - at the top of the home page, not half-baked analysis by TV analysts. What’s...

Blogger Beta Ships OpenID →
Google announced tonight that the new Blogger (nicknamed ‘Blogger in Draft’) will support OpenID-based commenting. Essentially it means that users of OpenID-enabled services - such as LiveJournal, WordPress and TypeKey - can comment on any Blogger blog using their accounts from those sites, rather than with Blogger/Google accounts.
This is another small but significant step on the...

Official: Facebook Flips On Beacon →
Reports surfaced yesterday, and now we have the official word from Facebook. Users will now have to opt-in to share purchases via Beacon:
Stories about actions users take on external websites will continue to be presented to users at the top of their News Feed the next time they return to Facebook. These stories will now always be expanded on their home page so they can see and read them...

Specifically about podcasting →
I’ve heard it said that podcasting didn’t achieve its promise, and I guess it’s time for me to say what I think about that.
First, obviously it depends on what you felt was the promise of podcasting.
Second, it depends whether you think there’s more to do.
I think there is much more to do, and when that’s done, podcasting will become more than it is.
As much as...
Anyone using GMaps Mobile on Blackberry 7100i? If so, is My Location working for you? I’m getting a “not on this device” error message.

Semantic Technology In Action: An Interview with... →
Each night this week while making dinner, I’ve listened to a different podcast interview with a semantic technology professional. It’s been a fascinating experience and the man I have to think for the education is Dr. Paul Miller, technology evangelist for semantic web platform vendor Talis. Miller is producing an informative, enjoyable and prolific series of hour-long conversations...

If you saw this one coming, give yourself a very large prize. Google is experimenting with Digg style voting features on search results that allow users to vote up or bury search results they see.
The program, part of Google Labs, works like this:
This experiment lets you influence your search experience by adding, moving, and removing search results. When you search for the same keywords again,...

Drinking Water War Rages in Lehigh Valley →
The Morning Call has a fascinating front-page piece on a battle for high quality drinking water between the city of Allentown and the Lehigh Valley Authority, a regional water distributor. At issue is Schantz Spring, an underground spring of very high quality water. Allentown owns it but the drinking water authority wants it to serve its growing customer base in 13 towns dotting the metropolitan...
Amazon’s Kindle Makes Buying E-Books Easy, Reading... →
Companies have failed for many years to produce a successful electronic reader, a dedicated device that would do for books what Apple’s iPod has done for music — allow you to carry around large numbers of titles and enjoy them in a convenient way.
Just a year ago, Sony took another stab at this concept with a product called the Sony Reader. Like the iPod, it was linked to an online store where...

A Big List of Sites That Teach You How To Do Stuff →
With all due respect to Kevin Smith, the web is no longer only for complaining about movies. In fact, there are a large number of very helpful sites that teach you how to do things. These are do-it-yourself sites, but we’re not talking about building a deck or baking a cake — the web is full of more general interest sites that give quality instruction on all sorts of fun and useful...

With Google’s My Location, Who Needs a GPS? →
Despite all the hoopla around location-based services, the fact of the matter is that a mere 15 percent of handsets have a built-in Global Positioning System. Given Google’s recent wireless push, one shouldn’t be surprised that Google is releasing an updated version of its Google Maps for Mobile application, which comes with a new service that gives you rudimentary location information without...
NASDAQ Internet Index - No Microsoft, News Corp? →
Yesterday we noted the launch of a new Nasdaq stock market index tracking only Internet companies, called the NASDAQ Internet Index. The index (^QNET) will track a diverse range of companies covering “Internet access providers, Internet search engines, web hosting, website design, and Internet retail commerce.”
The list is now available (thanks TraderMike). The leading companies...
Clean Tech Venture Deals Rising →
It is not just Google that is investing in clean tech these days. Green energy startups are cleaning up on Sand Hill Road as well. The National Venture Capital Association and Thomson Financial put out some figures today on the amount of U.S. venture capital going into clean tech startups—some of the startups are overseas, but the money came from U.S. firms. (You can download the full release...
Fear and Loathing Is Not A Great Brand Image →
I know Apple is one of the most loved companies in the world. I know that my girls and my friend Howard have ridden Apple’s stock from pre-split $20s to 10-15x returns I know that the Apple lovers will hate me and flame me for what I am about to say. My brand image of Apple these days is fear and loathing. I am afraid to upgrade to a new version of iTunes because it might make my music and...

Which Conversations Are Important Too!
In the world of business, it takes an action to make something happen. Watching rarely gets anything done. A conversation is a great place to make things happen. Yet, many of us seem to be missing out.
Where do you fit in the conversation? Are you a lurker, a listener, or a participant?
If you’re a lurker, you’re getting the value of the...
Note to Google: It’s Not Easy Being Green... →
With yesterday’s lofty (some would say overly windy) announcement from Google that it is going to invest a bundle to try to make clean energy cheaper than coal use, we thought it was the perfect time to post this very funny video about a trio of roomies battling over how to go green, with one named Green turning into Norman Bates of energy efficiency.
(It’s written and directed by Clea DuVall,...
Songs from the Best Albums of 2007 - Vol. 5 →
LCD Soundsystem’s Sound of Silver made a huge splash in 2007, bringing James Murphy and his crew some much deserved praise and profits. The album is pure indulgence, and electronic dance orgy on the verge of being busted up by the police at any moment. Each song is a roller coaster and you’re along for the ride. A great album for Saturday night, not Sunday morning. I hope you enjoy...

AOL Gets Serious About Finance →
AOL Money and Finance has been around almost as long as AOL itself - forever in Internet time. But they’ve sat on the sidelines as Yahoo periodically updated their own property, and Google launched their own competing site.
Even though AOL has not kept its service as cutting edge as the competition, they still move a lot of traffic. Recent worldwide comscore stats put them third behind Yahoo...
